Values

Individuality

Skills4Parents believes that people should be treated as individuals and allowed to be themselves fully.

This contradicts the implication from our education system which is that people have to ‘be the same’ in the classroom, aim for higher grades and are ‘better’ when they follow the pathway of GCSEs, A levels, and university. We believe that all routes are important and that they should be allowed to grow and fully recognise the potential that they have as an individual.

We do this through:

  • promoting different learning styles, and educating parents on learning styles
  • supporting parents to understand their child
  • explaining different pathways that are available
  • telling the stories of those who are successful and followed an alternative pathway
  • tutoring individuals in a way that works best for them

Self-Esteem

Skills4Parents believes that everyone should have a good opinion of themselves. We encourage positive self talk, and no apologies for anyone being themselves. People with good self-esteem challenge and stretch themselves, and we encourage this where possible.

We do this by:

  • encouraging parents to be a supportive part of their children’s lives
  • recognising and celebrating the strengths of each individual
  • equipping young people with the tools to manage their stress levels and balance work and play

Self-Worth

Skills4Parents believes that each person should value themselves as an individual. They should respect themselves, and we respect them. We believe every individual has value and that they are worth investing in. We appreciate what everyone brings different skills into the world and each skill is useful and should be appreciated.

We do this by:

  • being respectful of everyone we work with
  • promoting the value of the individual through the telling of individual stories
  • listening to and appreciating everyone we work with and in our free group
  • encouraging everyone to understand themselves and the way that they work
  • working with each individual’s strengths
  • supporting parents to fight for, and invest in their children

Self-Belief

Skills4Parents believes that everyone can do Maths with the right support and explanations, when they come from a place of belief in their abilities.

Many people, especially when it comes to maths, have lost their self-belief and feel that they can’t do it. We acknowledge that experiences in the past impact on our self-belief and we work to demonstrate that there is a different way. We encourage parents to improve their own self-belief, as evidence suggests that this helps their children.

We do this by:

  • encouraging and teaching about a growth mindset
  • using positive affirmations and language
  • reinforcing and celebrating all of the progress a young person has made in tutoring sessions
  • supporting parents to improve their own education and belief in themselves

Self-Confidence

Skills4Parents believes in building up the confidence of all of the young people we work with.

The education system, and the comparison to others that happens at school, can knock the confidence of young people. Growing up can be a difficult time. We are committed to building up the confidence of young people, demonstrating that they can do things, they just need the right teacher.

We do this by:

  • demonstrating what they can do, not what they can’t
  • finding their weaknesses and improving them
  • helping parents to work with their children by explaining misconceptions and different ways of learning
