Alternatives to Tutoring

When a young person is struggling with their maths it can seem that the only option is to get a tutor. Whilst that is right for some, it is not for others.

A parent knows their young person better than anyone else, and when you combine that with the right resources you get an unstoppable force which can be just as (or more) effective as having a tutor.

Alternatives to tutoring

There are so many ways you can help your young person with their maths, here are some of the things I suggest:

  • Use an online programme for learning maths such as Khan Academy which is free, or Mathletics which is £99 a year
  • Work with your young person to research different topics that they are struggling with. The internet is awash with maths videos and websites that explain different methods and have free worksheets
  • Buy workbooks for your young person to work through. There are many out there which are targeted at a particular year, grade or topic
  • Ask the teacher if they use powerpoint and get them to send them to you the ones they’ve used in class
  • Use past papers to do lots of exam practice
