Christmas-Themed Compass Fun
How well can you use compasses? What about your young person? Is it something they practice regularly?
At Skills4Parents, we like to take the stress out of maths, and if your young person is not confident with compasses (and you might not be too), it is an unnecessary stress.
It’s not a skill that is practiced in school as much as sometimes needed. It gets taught and forgotten. What if you don’t have fine motor skills? You can still master it with practice.
During my years in teaching I came up with the ‘twizzle’ ‘elbow’ ‘sweep’ method that can be seen here:
It’s also important to make sure your compasses are tight, as over time they loosen. That’s why I recommend having your own, and a screwdriver to tighten them regularly.
You need to use compasses for constructions at GCSE, so it is worth taking the time to master the skill. Don’t worry, we have a fabulous activity
Drawing Snowmen through Mathematical Constructions
Once you are comfortable using compasses accurately can you draw the following snowman?
To make the nose and other triangles, follow this video instruction for drawing triangles:
What other things can you draw using compasses?
Here are two I drew with compasses. Can you do better than me?
